The Nuada’s clean, modernist dial makes
telling the time incredibly simple. The hour is always displayed separately, while the principal hand on the dial points to the exact minute. The Nuada provides this simplicity, with an almost Bauhaus like approach of form following function; bringing together design and technology to offer, contemporary simplicity.
Presenting the Nuada range of watches; a sophisticated and distinctive revitalization of the jump hour concept. Jump hour watches arose when traditional watchmakers first faced competition from digital watches, during the 1970s. The Nuada range brings this concept into the 21st century, offering both quartz and mechanical variations: Our initial range is powered by a precision Miyota quartz gearbox movement, built specifically for a jump hour watch complication. Our mechanical version is fully automatic, powered by the refined, Swiss ETA 2895 -1 caliber. Naturally, to reflect the more prestigious Swiss automatic, this version of the Nuada will be available at a premium over the quartz version.
Nuada was the one Irish hero in a thousand, and his most famous epithet was, Airgetlám. This translates as ‘silver arm’. Nuada’s silver arm was a literal prosthesis, crafted for him after a mortal wounding in the first battle of Moytura. He survived the war, but lost his seat as king because of the blemish of losing an arm. A replacement was later made for him by Credne the God of fine metal work, and Dian Cecht the God of healing; thus, eliminating his blemish. This enabled Nuada to be both the first and third Irish king. Nuada led his people by providing them with safety, security, fair judgement and, the assurance of a warm welcome. A tradition that continues in Ireland today.
Our latest design represents a revitalization of the jump hour concept, just as Nuada’s silver arm revitalized his prominence. This was the perfect inspiration for our newest design, with its emphasis on indicating the minutes via its primary metal hand. At the end of each hour, the minute hand swings back like a sweeping sword, to begin marking off the next hour. In counterbalancing the cresting minutes arc, a stylized figure of eight is positioned at the bottom of the dial. Each hour being marked off within the smaller upper ring, while the days of the week are indicated around the lower sub dial.
The Nuada range offers three beautiful colour options on launch: Ice Fire, Silvern, and Seacurl. Each dial is multilayered, with the base featuring a shimmery metallic texture. Positioned at the top of the dial is a curved arc featuring the minutes track, with each ten-minute marker indicated across the arc. At the base of the dial are two different sized circular displays, in a figure of eight. The upper circle displays the hours on a white background. The larger lower sub-dial displays the days of the week on a railway track, around an inner silver dial. The hands include the primary hand, prominently finished in an engineer’s blue or polished silver. This indicates the minute track. The smaller mirrored hand on the sub dial, indicates each of the days of the week.
The Nuada’s case is formed from 316L steel. The case is exquisitely polished, with gently sweeping, unbroken curves that seamlessly integrate the lugs. The polished, curved circular bezel subtly serves to focus all attention on the uncluttered dial. The crown side of the case features an eloquent stylized elliptical recess, with inset push buttons at either end for additional adjustment. Mounted at the centre of the recess, is a polished, well-balanced, machinecut crown, featuring the engraved MD logo. The case back is of a stainless steel screw on construction. This is engraved with the stylized silver arm of Nuada. The case back perimeter features an engraved track combining Irish Celtic patterning with information about the watch.
